Chara Technologies
Building the brand for magnet-free EV powertrains, from naming to narrative.
Context
Between 2023 and 2026, Chara Technologies moved from a stealth-mode, academic engineering startup into a recognised name in magnet-free electric powertrains. Its motors generate rotation through software-controlled copper and steel electromagnets rather than permanent magnets, which removes the dependence on rare-earth materials mined and refined largely in China.
I led the marketing and brand from the ground up: the positioning, the naming, the visual direction, the social presence, and the messaging across PR and expos.
Problem
The technology was genuinely differentiated, but it spoke in engineering jargon. Synchronous reluctance and switched reluctance motors mean nothing to a procurement head or a policymaker. The advantage was real and invisible at the same time.
Thinking
The literal meaning of Chara is motion. Tying the name to the core breakthrough gave us the line "Motion Reimagined" and a way to pivot the company from a component supplier into a category creator, the clean alternative at the heart of e-mobility. The pilot facility in Bengaluru was named "The Flux Port," a play on the magnetic flux lines inside the motors, so even the building carried the story.
Execution
Two overlapping campaigns carried the narrative. #RareEarthFree built the environmental and ethical case against rare-earth mining. #DefyDependence shifted the same argument toward industrial self-reliance, framing imported magnets as a supply-chain vulnerability for automakers caught in US and China trade tension. The LinkedIn presence grew from around 3,000 to over 20,000 organic followers, and the work was supported by mainstream PR and an interactive expo presence that let procurement heads inspect raw motor stators and live efficiency telemetry rather than a banner.
Outcome
The category-creation approach drove inbound engagement and testing conversations with domestic and international OEMs seeking supply-chain insulation. The brand earned national coverage, federal recognition under the BharatInnovates showcase, and an Indian Innovation Icons award, all of which sat behind a successful Series A round.
