Yangwang, BYD's performance sub-brand (1)

The New King of Top Speed Is a BYD

Step aside, Bugatti, Rimac, and Koenigsegg. There's a new king of top speed.

Unbelievable, but true, that BYD, yes BYD, has just pulled off the unimaginable. Well, technically its sub-brand, Yangwang, by smashing the world record for the world's fastest production car.

What surprises me is how little buzz there is about this. Remember the storm when Christian von Koenigsegg toppled Bugatti's long-standing dominance? Then Rimac rose with Mate Rimac's vision, took the crown, lost it, then took it back again, albeit with Bugatti. Wild how Rimac acquired Bugatti in the process. That was the narrative in hypercar history.

All of that was true, until a few days ago. Now, the title belongs to Yangwang. On a side note, how un-serious is that name even.

I'll admit, I'm not thrilled that it is an EV holding the record. But at the same time, it makes me even more excited about what is next. How will petrol titans like Koenigsegg and Bugatti respond? What will Rimac, the original electric hypercar disruptor, do to reclaim the spotlight?

The hypercar wars just got interesting again.
